Golf  Guidelines

These are the guidelines we follow for our golf events.

Sign up for formal events

  • Deadline to pay is the Friday of the week before the outing
  • Deadline to sign up for informal golf is the Friday of the weekend when the golf will take place.
  • In the event that an outing is oversubscribed, members take precedence over nonmembers for both formal and informal golf, as long as the registration was received by or before the cutoff date.
  • Receipt of payment prior to deadline guarantees spot in the outing.
  • There will be a waiting list established for each event if the event is sold out.
  • Our policy will be to accommodate people on the waiting list when possible.
  • Refunds for cancellations after the payment deadline date will be given only if a replacement player is located or if the course does not charge us for the open spot(s).

Team make up

  • Blind draw on the morning of each event at the course.
  • Captains for each team will be predetermined to ensure an ASGA experienced player is on each team.
  • There will be two draws, one for females and one for males. Players will draw a number to determine team placement for the day, ie., If there are 16 players, there will be 4 number ones, 4 number twos, 4 number threes, and 4 number fours divided between 2 “hats”…one for men and one for women. The numbers will be placed in the hats so that team make-up by sex is as even as possible.
  • There will be a blind draw at the course only if there are 16 players or less. With more than 16 players, teams will be determined ahead of time by the organizer(s) using blind draw (with the exception of the team captains) and equalizing male and female players on each team as much as possible. Players will be notified of their team placement ahead of time so that the later players do not have to spend a lot of time waiting to tee off.

Prizes

  • Individual prizes will only be awarded when there are at least 16 players. Awarded for Longest Drive and/or Straightest Drive (Closest to the line) - M/F  and Closest to the Pin - M/F
  • If there is less than $120 in the prize pool (mulligan money plus the player surcharge), the award amount will be $5 for each individual prize. The remaining amount will be used for the team prizes. When the prize pool is equal to or greater than $120, the individual prizes will be $10 each.
  • ASGA will subsidize the prizes at the more expensive outings when we add no member surcharge. ASGA will pay the $5 per person prize money so that we can offer the same prizes that we do at all the formal outings.
  • Team Prizes
    • 1st place = 50% of prize pool, 2nd place = 30% of prize pool, 3rd place = 20% of prize pool
    • With 2 teams, the distribution is 60/40
    • Payment to the winning teams should be rounded down, club to pick up the change

Mulligans

    • $1 for each mulligan. (Maximum allowed per person is 2.)
    • Can be used anywhere, anytime, any hole on the course.
    • Cannot use it to win an award. (Mulligans used on an award shot do not count for the award, only for the team.)
    • Captain collects the money and hands to the event chairperson or designee.
    • Team scorekeeper should mark an M on the hole for each person when a mulligan is used.
    • When the prize pool is less than $120, mulligan money may be used to subsidize the prizes. When the prize pool is $120 or greater, the mulligan money will be returned to the treasury.
    • Mulligan numbers and costs may be changed for certain outings with board approval.

Charge to play

    • Price charged to members equals cost to play plus $5 (rounded up to the closest $5). The surcharge will be used for prizes for the event.
    • Any first time participant who joins after an event will receive a $10 coupon to be used at a future Albany ASGA event within in the year.
    • Price charged to nonmembers equals the member cost plus $10. The $10 will go into the treasury.
  • The golf chairman or organizers for each of the formal events will receive a $20 credit towards his/her cost of the outing.
  • The organizer of each informal event will receive $5.00 in ASGA bucks to be used at a formal outing or party.
  • Guidelines for 2009 nonmember surcharges
  • $10 for formal golf
  • Not to exceed $10 for social events (We will decide by event.)

We play by the rules of ready golf at all our events.

rules of ready golf

Be an Informal Golf Captain
In order to offer a golf opportunity every weekend during the season, we need some help in setting up our informal golf outings. Anyone is welcome to set up any informal golf at anytime (including weekdays), but we'd like to plan ahead to ensure that there is some ASGA golf on most weekends.

As an Informal Golf Captain, you:
(1) Get $5.00 in ASGA bucks to use at a local formal outing or party
(2) Pick the course, the day & a place for drinks &/or dinner after golf
(3) Call the course to get the cost of 18 holes and 2-3 Tee Times (as far in advance as the course allows)
(4) E-mail the details to albanyasga2002@yahoo.com for broadcast to Albany ASGA E-mail list
(5) Coordinate w/ the course, ASGA members & friends who respond, so all Tee Times are filled with foursomes
(6) Get a tentative reservation for drinks &/or dinner after the golf.

To avoid being charged at higher "event rates," Informal Golf Captains should use her/his own name, & not mention ASGA, in all contacts with the course. Also, be sure to check the course cancellation policy if you use your credit card to reserve any tee time.

Since everyone will golf her or his own ball & there are no formal prizes, the Informal Golf Captain’s only responsibility at the course is to get foursomes to the 1st Tee on time.

Since many members have purchased a Golf Calendar Card (see ASGA Treasurer Mike Congero if you need one), we usually opt for courses that accept the Golf Calendar Card, but that's not a requirement. Courses which accept the Golf Calendar Card & for which we're NOT planning formal ASGA golf in 2009 include: FRENCH's HOLLOW in Guilderland Center, FREAR PARK in Troy, SYCAMORE in Ravena, SCHENECTADY MUNI in Schenectady, and BURDEN LAKE in Averill Park & PIONEER HILLS in Ballston Spa. There's also WESTERN TURNPIKE in Guilderland and STADIUM in Schenectady which do not accept the Golf Calendar Card. Many of our Friday night "9-&-Dine" events will be at TOWN OF COLONIE which does accept the Golf Calendar Card.

As soon as possible before her/his event, the Informal Golf Captain should e-mail the following information to AlbanyASGA2002@yahoo.com:
a. Course name, Tel #, & directions (if NOT on ASGA website).
b. Day & Date & Tee Times (usually, between noon & 1pm) or estimated Tee Times if they’re NOT confirmed.
c. Cost for 18holes WALKING, for 18holes w/ shared cart - both without & with Golf Calendar Card (which usually provides 2-for-1 Greens Fees w/ shared cart) & any other golf card accepted.
d. After-golf place, Tel #, & directions (if NOT on ASGA website).
e. Captain’s name, e-mail address & cell phone number (if any)

If you'd like to be an “Informal Golf Captain”, please contact: Marion Gogola or John Holmes at AlbanyASGA2002@yahoo.com.
